What would yours cost, and how long would it take?

Answer as much as you can and a real range builds as you go, with the split across every phase, a live date, and a straight account of what would move the number. Nothing is sent anywhere and there is no email box in the way.

Writing your situation out in a paragraph is not available at the moment. Working through the questions gets you exactly the same figure.

01Tell us what you need, however roughly

Write a few sentences about what is going wrong and what you want instead, and we will fill in as much of this page as we can from it. Or skip it and answer the questions yourself.

A couple of sentences is plenty.

02What sort of system is it?

Choose as many as apply. Most projects of this size are two or three of these at once.

03What does it actually have to do?

Choose at least one kind of system above and the options will appear here.

04Who will be using it?

40

05What does it need to talk to?

Anything it has to keep in step with. If yours is not listed, add it below and tell us how open it is.

Something else it has to talk to

There is a way in, but it is dated, thinly documented, or the supplier is slow to answer.

06What happens to what you already hold?

07Anything it has to be able to promise?

Only tick what you are genuinely held to. Each of these touches every screen, so they are far cheaper decided now than added later, and they are not worth paying for speculatively.

08How settled is this, and when do you need it?

09What that comes to

Once you have chosen a kind of system and what it has to do, the full breakdown appears here: the range, the timescale, the split across each phase, and what would move the number.

About these figures

The arithmetic behind this page is published in full on how we work, and the rate card carries the date it was last checked against the UK market.

How accurate is this really?

As accurate as anyone can be before spending time inside your business. The range is real and the midpoint lands close. Where the brief is only a sketch the range is wide on purpose, because a narrow number at that stage is a guess in a good suit. Two weeks of discovery halves it.

Why show prices at all? Nobody else does.

Because the alternative burns an afternoon of your time establishing something you could have found out in three minutes. If £80,000 is out of the question, you deserve to know that before a call rather than after one.

Is this a quotation?

No. This is what work of this shape costs at today's rates. Your quotation comes after the first phase, once both sides know exactly what is being built, and that one is fixed.

What day rate is behind these numbers?

Between £580 and £1050 a day depending on who is doing the work, blended differently for each phase because each phase needs a different mix of people. UK specialist consultancies outside London bill £650 to £950 for senior delivery work; these sit in the upper half of that and below London rates.

Does the figure include VAT?

No. Everything on this site is shown excluding VAT, which is added at the prevailing rate on invoice.

What if my project does not fit any of these boxes?

Then the figure lands roughly right and the shape lands wrong, which half an hour on the phone fixes. The oddest projects are usually the ones most worth building, so an awkward fit here is a good sign rather than a bad one.

Seen a number you can work with?

Half an hour on the phone turns that range into a figure and a start date. It tells you far more than this page can, and it costs you nothing but the half hour.
